Who works better when their stress levels are high? I think we all know the answer to that one!
In an ideal world, we would all have access to stress-busting equipment at the drop of a hat no matter where we are, but unfortunately, that is just a pipe dream for the majority of us, especially in the workplace!
I have read many articles online and in print that offers great ideas and tips on how you can make your workplace a more productive place by offering stress-busting techniques. Some of these are very simple like making sure your staff is taking regular breaks, providing water dispensers so they can stay hydrated etc., but when we really look at these tips, how many will actually be utilised by the employee on a regular basis so that it makes a long-lasting impression? When staff is trying to meet tight deadlines or they are caught up offering excellent customer service that is expected of them, it is easy to miss breaks, lunch and even leaving on time.
One way to combat this is having a designated area in the office that is solely dedicated to the well-being of the staff. In this country, we seem very behind in this area and have only just started making these changes. A friend of mine who went travelling in Australia 10 years ago told me of a wellbeing room in the building she worked in. This room was used as an incentive for staff as well as a room to help bring an equal balance in the workplace. It was filled with exercise equipment including a rock climbing wall and trampoline, it had comfy chairs and bean bags around the floor, a miniature library for books and music, free smoothies and juices and a closed-off area to practice yoga and meditation. Each team had an hour a week in the room and the team with the most sales at the end of the week got the room for a whole afternoon on a Friday (including the free bar!). The company also gave every employee a free breakfast of toast or cereal. Now I know there are not many companies out there that have a budget for this type of stress-busting wellbeing, but there are many options around that can help make a difference to their employees.
